Roughly ~950.500 people are active on and around AT Protocol in Germany.
Two main numbers
A wider survey estimate
ARD and ZDF put regular Bluesky use in Germany at about 2.800.000 people (4% of people 14 and over), from a representative sample of 2.512 people (70% by phone, 30% online), projected to the 70,5 million German speakers aged 14 and over. It counts everyone who says they use Bluesky, lurkers included, so it measures reach rather than accounts we can see. A random-sample study, so less prone to the online skew of opt-in panels, but "regular use" is self-reported and still far broader than accounts we can place. Even so it lands far above the two numbers above, which makes those look conservative.

How we estimate this
AT Protocol has no country field, so we cannot count directly. We measure posting activity per language across Europe, weight each language to the countries where its speakers live, and calibrate the whole model to the Dutch figure on atproto.nl. Language only feeds the estimate; it never confirms that an account belongs to Germany.
What we can stand behind
7.081 accounts we can place in Germany for certain, each from a deliberate signal. The real number is higher, which is what the estimate models.

Those 7.081 accounts by the signal that placed each one. Every account is counted once, under its strongest signal.
What it cannot see
People who post mainly in English are invisible to a language model, so an English-first account in Germany is not captured, which is part of why the real number sits above the confirmed floor.
